Integrated Poultry and Aquaculture Value Chain Project

This project integrates broiler poultry production, aquaculture (catfish farming), and fish value addition through smoking and packaging. By combining livestock and aquaculture enterprises, the initiative addresses food security, youth employment, women empowerment, and long-term agribusiness sustainability in Nigeria.

Project Components

  • Poultry Production (Broilers): Rearing broiler chickens using the deep litter system for meat supply.
  • Aquaculture (Catfish Farming): Stocking and managing African catfish for 6 months to reach commercial size.
  • Fish Processing & Value Addition: Smoking, drying, and packaging catfish to extend shelf life and expand markets.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased Livestock Production: Healthy broilers and table-size catfish for market.
  • Value-Added Products: Smoked and packaged catfish for retail and wholesale distribution.
  • Skills Development: Training youth and women in poultry, aquaculture, and value addition enterprises.

Impact

  • Economic: Job creation, household income growth, and reduced imports.
  • Nutritional: Increased access to affordable animal protein.
  • Social & Environmental: Women/youth empowerment, reduced post-harvest losses, and recycling of chicken droppings as pond fertilizer.

Measurable Metrics

  • Poultry: 1,000–2,000 broilers per cycle (6–8 weeks), avg 2.5–3.0kg per bird.
  • Aquaculture: 20,000 catfish stocked, ≥90% survival, avg 1–1.5kg at harvest.
  • Processing: 1–2 tons of smoked fish/month, sold to 50–100 retailers.
  • Capacity Building: 20+ youths/women trained annually.
  • Income: ₦5m–₦10m estimated annual revenue.
